While spending a month in the Bosendorfer factory in 1977 schraffing the strings was SOP for the string winder. He would pick up a mill bastard file and scrape it up and down the length of the string two or three times and then wind the string. I do not know how it effects tone, but the stringers where twisting the strings then. Newton nhunt@rci.rutgers.edu
