As to:

>Is there any way to adjust the key depth on a piano so the key response
>happens more at the surface?

What is meant by key depth? And what is meant by key response? What is
meant by more at the surface? Surface of the key, as in something in the
touch happening earlier in the keystroke? Or are they talking about an
experience of tone or volume?
As you mentioned, as soon as you talk with them directly you'll probably be
able to sort out what the complaint is and what they are after. Let us know
the translation!
