Mic vs. Caliper

Is there a major difference between a micrometer and a dial caliper?  It
seems that calipers could fit into places often times where a micrometer
couldn't.  In addition, when one is not measuring the outside diameter of
strings, a caliper could be used to measure inside dimensions of. . .
whatever.
