Must have something to do with the test setup. I have seen tests using a
normal pinblock with wires top and bottom, bent at 90 degrees so that they
both extended out past the stretcher bar. There was also a hole drilled
through the top of the tuning lever tip.

It was very easily demonstrated that the pin could be left with a twist in
it. Tried it myself. And the torque wasn't all that high - maybe 125
inch-pounds.

Nothing mythical about it!

Could it be that your test jig puts most of it's squeeze on the tuning pin
in one spot? Try it with 2 bolts, one at the top and one at the bottom of
the pin.
