 I give up, I'll do it right, have already done it as a matter of fact. The
block has now been fitted, mortised, doweled, glued, screwed, and is now in
clamps in the piano.  I'll let you know if there is a concomitant increase in
tone or power.
Just FYI out of responses, 9 total, the score was:
a.  "fit and glue the sucker dummy"--- 9 total
b.  "nah don't bother"--- 0 total
