Carol When these pinblocks are removed the real problem becomes apparent. Frequently there are cracks eminating from the screw holes toward the closest tuning pin. The top layer on a Steinway block is sometimes 3/8" thick and if it has a cracked top layer, the likelihood of that tuning pin holding is very slim. With the oversized tuning pin given this situation, the immediate effect will be tightness but the long term result will be failure. I think a little soap in the tuning pin hole may actually cause friction, not slippage. Just a guess. David Sanderson Littleton, MA P.S. Jim Don't Go!
