Hi, In the old Russian instructions for the selection of the wood for musical instrument soundboards, a specific parameter was used as a criteria of the mechanical properties: it was called "the radiation constant" of the material and it was formulated as a result of research by Russian acousticians as: Square Root ([Young modulus] /[density in the power 3]) This constant was shown to depend not on the grain width only. It was recommended to have two consecutive planks in the soundboard to have a minimal difference in the value of this radiation constant.
