I live in Indiana (land of Kimballs) and work on them almost daily.  I
have seen many Whitneys with broken spring rail springs.  I just replace
them all with new ones.  

When the customer will allow it, I reshape the hammers, regulate the
action and soften the hard hammers down (alcohol & lanolin) and they
make decent home pianos.
