I recently serviced a smart bar setup where the owner had been filling
with 'softened' water.  The pads were dry at the top but the salt had
piled up all over the place in neat little mounds, closing the connection
on the smart bar and fooling it into thinking there was moisture there .
. . . 

Solution:  no softened water,
