I run into this little number all the time. While it's probably not
possible to buy a modem these days that doesn't have fax capabilities, that
still leaves a minor problem or two. When the phone rings, and someone
answers it, they are shrieked at by an incoming fax. If you're one of those
folks who leaves your computer up and running all the time (I don't), the
auto answer will beat you to the phone and shriek in your customer's ear
with the fax initialization sequence. Customers like that almost as much as
I do, which puts them in a fine state of mind to arrange an appointment.
Then there's the scenario when you, the answering machine, and the fax
modem answer together and battle it out as you try to shout over the noise
to tell your customer to hang on while you bash some machinery to pieces.
The only way I've found that this works is to receive faxes by pre
arrangement with a voice call. And if you already have the person on the
phone...
