Not sure of the year but celluloid was used in the teens.  Plastic wasn't
invented until late 30s as I recall. Ivory became too hard to come by. It is
made from elephant tusks and is no longer legal to import. Each keyboard
represented the death of one human.....the slaves had to pack them to the
port for shipment and many died in the process.  Seems to me there was an
article in PT Journal a number of years back about ivory.
