On a wooden floor, it will prevent the piano from moving around, and it save 
the floor. 
On carpet, if the it is too think, it will prevent the pedals from going all 
the way down, and it will save the rug from the casters. 

On the other hand, it also makes it difficult to move the piano away from the 
wall.
