Would one then also want to remove the action prior to moving the
instrument, even if it was just to be on its side for 8 hours???????

The weight of the hammers hanging on the shanks can warp the shanks over 
time. Better to take the action out, wrap it in plastic, and put it
somewhere 
flat.
