This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment eBay would not be a practical option for selling a piano like this. It = would simply cost to much to ship to the winning bidder. The other = problem being that potential buyers would want to see something like = this in person. No takers. Someone suggested eBay and auction it. I = checked them out and, at the time found none on their list. One source = told me he has seen them on the auction sight(s) go for about $4-800.00. = Not much value regardless of appearance or condition. Seems no one (or = very, very few) wants to "invest" in this type of piano. I hope this = gives you something to work with. Paul Chick ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Clark A Sprague=20 To: pianotech@ptg.org=20 Sent: Wednesday, August 08, 2001 6:59 PM Subject: Knabe Square Grand I thought I would post this again, since there has been no replies, = and I hoped to get some word back to the folks soon! List, I was sent on an appraisal today, the subject being a = beautiful=20 Knabe Square Grand piano, serial #18200. This number was stamped on = an=20 edge of the lid. I am not knowledgeable about these, so I said that = I=20 would do some research for them, to see if we could ascertain a = ballpark=20 value. The case was refinished, and it appears to have also been = re-pinned=20 and re-strung, he said about 20-30 years ago. Whoever did it did = what=20 looks like a credible job. The piano is beautiful. Plate either=20 re-painted or just in good appearance, no cracks that I could see in = either the plate or the soundboard. I got under it and saw several=20 cracks in the keybed. The action had hammers sticking up, so I didn't even want to = take=20 the time to remove the action, or risk breaking off hammers. I = would=20 assume that the action would need to be completely restored. There = were=20 damper levers way out of line (easily seen because they are on the = top=20 side of the plate), and 3 damper lifters (?) out of their guide rail = holes, just laying on top of the plate. The ivories were in very = good condition. Can anyone out there give me their opinion on what I should do = for a=20 value, and what it would cost to restore the action? Or maybe = someone=20 out there is interested in purchasing this piano for restoration=20 purposes? I tried to explain to them that the value of this was as = a=20 collector's item, not so much as an instrument, but they wanted me = to do=20 the research for them. It is a beautiful piece, and if the number = is=20 indeed the serial number, it is between 1875 and 1880, with the = carved=20 legs and music desk. Anyone responding may respond privately to: clarks11628@juno.com, or = on=20 the list if they so desire. Thanks to all!
