I use my thumb and forefinger, dip them in water and wipe the shank before applying the heat. I think they bend easier and feel like there is less chance of damage to the wood. I was thinking of you today while tuning, all the piano _really_ needed was a thorough hammershaping and voicing, same thing you posted recently.
