Clothe Micrometer

Newton et al,
You said: "Use a micrometer to determine thicknesses (don't screw it down
too hard.)" That peeked my interest!

There is a very specific Micrometer for measuring the thickness of Felt,
(cloth). I have several of them. (One in my stringing kit/field, two in the
shop and one in the "bone yard".) These are Delicate measuring instruments,
but are ideal for measuring, not only cloth, but for strings. This is a
somewhat "square" shaped apparatus with a dial/needle, etc. It is spring
loaded so the pressure exerted on the sample is always the same. The one I
like is a Mitutoyo, #7308. Starrett also makes a similar one, but a whole
lot more expensive. It has a 1" capacity. The newest one I have has a
lanyard on it, which helps in preventing damage from dropping. The one I
have in the "bone yard" was dropped! Need I say anything more there?
The only other Micrometer that I find useful is a 6" Digital Caliper. (Also
a Mitutoyo)
My olde style micrometer is relegated to the repinning kit in the shop and
is seldom used. Most helpers I have in the shop, hate it because they have
to know the secret to read it and even then it's a pain compared to the more
modern stuff available.
