Hi all Didn't get at the computer last nite, so here's a quickie. :) I forgot my palm pilot, so I don't have notes for you. I took 3 classes yesterday. Extreme results, with Guy Nichols. He started class with a jacket and tie. When he was sure everyone was there, made sure we noted the jacket and took it off right away. Good class on what you could do to a grand in 3-4 hours (not counting tuning/voicing) to get the action responding. Tighten everything, then clean, repair broken parts, mark capstans, letoff with index marks for roughing in later, and so on.... Next, was grand dampers with David Koelzer. Another good class, showed his damper holder for prebending and checking, once the felt is removed. His biggest point was to get both the rail and the back of the keysticks flat, before putting on felt. That way it is only a matter of lining up two flat lines to be parallel. Much quicker for regulating. Last, Piano tools, with Paul Monachino. Factory tech with tools from waaaaaay back, many shop-made. Historical value, but a snoozer for me. I tuned the Preston during lunch break. Nossman was glad it was me, not him tuning during the noise. Even through the earplugs I overheard "How can he hear anything?" Ran into Newton, Howard Rosen, and a bunch that stopped by while I was tuning. More tomorrow.
