If you clamp the Vise-Grip on the wire, right against the top of the old 
elbow before you break it off the wire, you have a depth stop for inserting 
into the new elbow that should make them close enough to the original to 
save some lost motion regulation time when you put the action back in. 
That's assuming it was in the ball park in the first place, and the new 
elbow is the same size as the old.
