If you're reasonably sure the Lego set will eventually arrive, I recommend an appropriately sized and lidded empty box with diversionary gift and a note inside saying "This is a magic box. Watch this space, check it every morning when you get up. Goodies sometime appear in here." Then leave an occasional couple of M&Ms or other small surprises until one morning he looks in and finds the Lego set with a note that the box's mission is complete, and it has deactivated until further notice.
