Designed for speed of assembly rather than mechanical integrity, 
apparently, or they would have just duplicated the wooden flanges in 
plastic. I like all the molded in holes and channels. I presume these are 
for shrinkage and warp control as the part cooled coming out of the 
injection mold.

How brittle is the plastic now? Does the flange shatter when you squeeze it 
with pliers - or maybe you'd rather whack one with a really big hammer?

So be it. We've all paid for someone else's bad judgement, or done without, 
just like others have paid for ours, or done without.
