Question from Ron N: How brittle is the plastic now? Does the flange
shatter when you squeeze it
with pliers - or maybe you'd rather whack one with a really big hammer?

Answer: Not like the old stuff at all. Actually, I think it's good
plastic--may be Lexan polycarbonate resin, actually. I don't see
anything wrong with the flange, the way it pins, or it's shape. It's
just the poor design of that one critical element that is so faulty. I
wonder what kind of tests they did to determine the stresses and loads
that the spring and damper assembly would be putting on that spring
pivot. Or did they just guess? I dunno.
