Something to consider, on the " do they do any harm" side: A freshly rebuilt Yamaha concert grand had an intermittent buzz in the bass. It was eventually tracked down to a couple globs of varnish "bridging" between the soundboard and the bridge in one of those hollowed out sections. Those shallow tunnels under a bridge are just one more place for garbage to collect and work invisible mischief.
