Usually they are simply butted. Epoxy is used as an adhesive. Spread =
unfilled epoxy on the end-grain of the beam and let it soak for a few =
minutes, brushing on more as needed to keep a wet surface. Fill some =
epoxy with wood flour to a peanut butter consistency and spread it on =
the end of the beam and on the surface of the inner rim and wedge the =
beam into place. Clean up the squeeze out and allow the mix to cure. =
Drill at a diagonal through the beam and into the inner rim and/or the =
bellyrail and install two 1/2" dowels each top and bottom.

  Subject: Added beams

I can't tell from the picture what kind of joint is used for the added =
beams. Is it just butted and glued, or is there some kind of notching or =
hardware?

  Thanks,
