<<I was just more or less setting the pins and strings and had 2 bass strings pop. >> They could have broken for several reasons, not the least of which is the age of the piano/strings. They just might have reached their maximum stretch point, became very brittle, or unknown to you they got 'snagged" on one of the bearing points. Where did it break? At the coil, at the hitch or bridge pin area, or elsewhere? I ALWAYS use protek on ALL bearing points, and whether it's just my luck, or it really works, i have not had a single broken string, bass or otherwise, for a long, long time. Of course, even a NEW piano string can break either when tuning or playing, but it's rare. Defects can be the culprit sometimes as nothing is perfect ALL THE TIME. Ooops, hope I didn't just "jinx" myself! :) Terry Peterson ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Benny L. First pass pitch raise from about 35 cents flat went just fine. Second pass, I was just more or less setting the pins and strings and had 2 bass strings pop. What I don't understand is why after pulling up from 35 cents flat they didn't pop then. Only while settling the pins and strings with very, very small movements did they break. Strings "looked" to be in really good shape. No rust or corrosion, and I always let down before pulling up anyway, at least during the initial pitch correction. This has happened to me on several occasions lately. This has just got me to wondering if I'm doing something wrong or does anyone else ever experience this? One good thing about this is that I'm now real good at string splicing. Have a great day! Benny L.
