I've seen this before.  It happened when I removed excess lost motion from a 
wurly spinet. Damper lift started sooner in the keystroke, the damper lifted 
higher, and the bottom of the damper lever zinged against the strings during 
loud playing.

Add a bit of lost motion and see what happens to the zing.
