---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Well, I have been conditioned here on this list to never talk about=20 anything else but piano's. In the times that I was more frequent in my responses to this list I=20 every now and then gave in to a what I call a jelly mood , meaning that=20= I felt giggly and jokingly. I know that even that was something being frowned upon and for using=20 non-'Christian words' I have already been crucified a number of times, =20= not to mention the word POS... what a joke. I have learned from it that to be able to communicate one had to follow=20= certain rules, rules I personally have not made. I have also learned that as soon as somebody here started talking about=20= religious and political issues, immediately a heated discussion (and=20 sometimes more than heated) would take place to ensure that we only=20 discus piano related matters. (forgot about BB?) Apparently that all seems changed now. You know folks, it's all fine with me. I am just an outsider, (and indeed, I do make many writing mistakes)=20 and this list is in origin an American list, so in order to be a=20 subscriber, I 'll try to find my way through the list rules, which,=20 apparently now suddenly seem to change. friendly greetings from Andr=E9 Oorebeek Amsterdam - The Netherlands 0031-20-6237357 0645-492389 0031-75-6226878 www.concertpianoservice.nl www.grandpiano.nl On 14-feb-04, at 20:39, David Skolnik wrote: > Andre, David, Sarah, Y'all- > > First, I think that the acceptance and use of the OT designation has=20= > been remarkably successful...(exceptin' for the Porsche thread)...=20 > almost as much so as the success of municipalities in convincing their=20= > citizenry, whether peasant or royalty, to pick up after their pets.=A0=20= > It allows me, in my manual archiving, to simply channel non-technical=20= > posts to their own location, where I can look at them if I so choose,=20= > without distracting me when I'm reviewing the technical posts.=A0 > > This list has long had what could rightly be called a "DON'T ASK!=20 > DON'T TELL" policy.=A0 That is, we have elected to acknowledge only=20 > enough of each other to allow a singular conversation.. about pianos.=A0= =20 > In theory, it wouldn't matter if a contributor has perpetrated some=20 > outrageous act, or holds repugnant beliefs.=A0 If their contributions = to=20 > the list conform to our expectations of content and form, then they=20 > have fulfilled the primary list requirements.=A0 So, what deep need is=20= > being fulfilled by the periodic venture "OFF TOPIC" ?=A0=A0=A0=A0It's = natural=20 > for an active mind to make associations, and sometimes it helps to=20 > relieve the tension engendered by having to monitor and filter what=20 > one says to those who have become a kind of community.=A0 But, is = there=20 > a difference between an "OT" which is simply observational, and one=20 > which is intended or can be expected to be controversial or=20 > inflammatory?=A0 > > In fact, I think we feel the periodic need to remind ourselves that=20 > the world we have created with this list is not real, and that there=20= > IS a difference between a cyber community and, dare I say, a real"=20 > one.=A0=A0 In the latter, we cannot easily choose to ignore those=20 > qualities that challenge our own values.=A0 While we share common=20 > endeavors and interests, we reflect a tremendous range of experience,=20= > opinion, and convictions and we may not wish to or be able to=20 > acknowledge the validity of an opposing view.=A0 What do you suppose = the=20 > effect on the list would be, of our knowing the political, religious,=20= > sexual, or other preferences of each of the contributors?=A0 Would it,=20= > in some subtle (or not) way, affect the way we interact with each=20 > other?=A0 This is, for the most part, a comfortably or uncomfortably=20= > amoral environment, depending on your point of view. > > We might choose (theoretically) to have yet another, separate place=20 > (list) expressly for those sorts of exchanges... one which, like=20 > ptg-l, would have controlled access.=A0 If a few people want to have=20= > such a dialog, they would retire to that list, whose contents would=20 > notbe archived with the regular list, a concern I find reasonable.=20 > However if, in fact, the motivation is to "witness" ones beliefs in as=20= > broad a public as possible, or to change the beliefs of others, such a=20= > separate list would probably prove inadequate.=A0 In that case, the = only=20 > hope would be the conscious commitment to respect the principles by=20 > which this list has thrived. > > And then, of course, in these times of Homeland Security, there's=20 > those paranoid types amoung(st?)=A0 us (why do you think I'm talking=20= > about you?) who suspect that any statement of conviction might be read=20= > and noted by invasive authorities. > > HOW ABOUT IT ANDY?=A0 A FIGHT LIST? > > Rambling pomposity at its best - > > David Skolnik > > - > > At 11:49 AM 2/14/2004 -0500, you wrote: > > Andre, David, et al., > =A0 > 'Nuff said, then.=A0 My sincere apologies for being OT.=A0 I've tried=20= > keeping OT stuff to < 10%, on the whole, over time.=A0 I hope I've = been=20 > successful in that regard.=A0 I make no apologies for having political=20= > opinions, though -- or for my opinions being what they are. > =A0 > Peace, > Sarah > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: antares > > To: Pianotech > > Sent:Saturday, February 14, 2004 11:44 AM > > Subject:Re: Yeah!!!
