bass strings

Before replacing the strings I would make sure that the buzz is coming from 
the strings.  You said stuff had gotten on the dampers as well.  Some of 
the dampers may have gotten hard as a result and are causing a buzz upon 
their return to the string.  Does it buzz when the key is held down and the 
note is sounding, or when the key is released?
