  Sometimes they get don't get brittle.   Kind of slightly soft of brittle
and they don't fall apart like we'd like them to.  Then it's a pain in the
ass...

  David.  Have you tried heating them with a heat gun?  The elbows will turn
to a near liquid state and can be pulled off the center pins with needle
nose pliers.  Any little residue is easy to remove when cool.
