Hi, Jonathan.  You could wrap the copper end to something solid and "roll" the wire through your fingers as it unwraps.  Or simply clamp the other end and pull the copper wire off.  The core wire will whip around in a circular fashion as it unwinds.  If the copper wire gets too long, just clip it off.  All the above assumes you are using universal strings.  No?

Is there a quick way to remove the winding from the ends of bass strings?  I've been using pliers to unravel it and it takes a long time.
