Here's a method that only works on the tuning pin end of the wire. After
marking where the copper needs to end, take side cuts and cut or chew
around the windings. You don't actually have to cut through the copper.
Then start to peel the copper off the end, unwinding as normal. After
you get a couple of inches of wire sticking out, begin trying to twist
the entire section of copper you want off of there. Starting from the
end the coils will begin to break loose of the core and spin. Watch this
progress all the way down to where you make your "cut" with the side
cuts. When it gets there the copper is weakened because of your cut and
it will not propagate the loosening on down the wire. Instead it will
kind of pop out there and if it does not break off it will be easy to
cut it.

Now as you continue to rotate your coils they will just spin on the
core. You should be able to pull the undesirable copper right off the
end of the core.

Too bad this won't work on the hitch pin end.

Hi, Jonathan. You could wrap the copper end to something solid and
"roll" the wire through your fingers as it unwraps. Or simply clamp the
other end and pull the copper wire off. The core wire will whip around
in a circular fashion as it unwinds. If the copper wire gets too long,
just clip it off. All the above assumes you are using universal
strings. No?
    Good luck.

Is there a quick way to remove the winding from the ends of bass
strings? I've been using pliers to unravel it and it takes a long time.
