Rim protection when removing plate

I'm using a power winch with two extra pulleys to step down the line speed,
Christian Bolduc's plate pulling tool,
pipe insulation taped to the rim,
and 1/2" or 3/8" hardwood dowels in plate screw holes to guide the plate.

My future plan is to attach thick buckskin or fabric to the pipe insulation
and create sections of 'skirting' that I can reconfigure for each piano.

  How do you protect the inside of the rim while you are cycling the plate
in and out.
