O.K.  A bit more information.   This is a Behning square, #21122.  If  I 
read my Pierce correctly it was made between 1880 and 1885.

I'm sure there is information somewhere which would tell me the pitch 
placement for A4 for this time period.  But I suspect one of you has that 
specific bit of knowledge right on the tip of your tongue (fingertips?) 
which would probably save me hours of searching.
