Yes, That is something every novice/apprentise should be aware - ALWAYS with 
the customer present, check out HOW the player of the piano plays before you 
touch anything, UNLESS the customer tells you before you do anything that 
they know the player is not working.

Maybe someone mentioned this already, but in case not, here is something
from Bill Brandom at Yamaha:  have the customer work the player with you
there before you touch anything so you (both) know whether or not it works.
