Hypothetical values and the character of a person may be very different.
While I differ greatly with this man's religious convictions, I'd stake my
career on his integrity.   It was a tongue in cheek method of saying it
isn't always cut and dried in this business of earning a living.

If he truly charges by the "thickness of carpet," his business ethics and
practices are hardly above reproach, IMO.

Charge a fair price for your work and discount as you please.  Basing your
charges on a clients wealth is most assuredly unscrupulous behaviour,
unprofessional, unethical.............
