James - I do not understand what you mean by "recalibrate to minimize runout". Sounds like some sort of basic drill press tuning that I obviously don't have a clue about. I do know what runout is, but I don't know anything about runout calibration. Please educate me!

  1.  The current (and intended future) moisture content of your new maple strips.  What's snug now might not be in February.

  2.  If you're using a floor drill press, maybe recalibrate to minimize runout.  If benchtop, definitely recalibrate to get as close to zero runout as possible.  Arrrgh.
