Look again closely at the picture - you can see that the routing only went a bit more than half way through the rail. The maple insert strips are just a half-inch thick - just the thickness that the rail pin bases are long. The way I did it, I had the pin locations fairly well nailed down, and routing and cutting two little strips of maple went fairly quickly.
