Hi Paul, Yes, you are making sense. I moved the rail just far enough to match the other two rails' alignment to the jack toes. The hanging jack fix was also suggested to me by Paul Marshall at Kawai tech support. Some of the Indonesian Kawai uprights have the "mystery" sticky note problem, but I haven't had a chance to check them out since I learned of this possibility. Thanks for the info, Dave Stahl Dave Stahl Piano Service 650-224-3560 dstahlpiano at sbcglobal.net http://dstahlpiano.net/ -----Original Message----- From: pmc033 at earthlink.net To: pianotech at ptg.org Sent: Sun, 22 Oct 2006 9:33 AM Subject: Re: a puzzler....at least for me; the answer HI, Dave: Be careful not to move that rail too far back. You may find that the jacks will wedge themselves between the hammer butt and the rail, and cause them to stick. I often find this to be the case, and have to move the rail slightly away from the butts to correct the problem. You may not notice this happening at first, but on a series of quick blows, the jack slips out and won't go back under the butt, while the hammer is close to the rest rail. If you find some sticking keys that just don't seem to respond to the the usual fixes, check to see if that rail is too far in. It only takes a few mm's of movement to correct the problem. Am I making sense? Hope so. Good luck. The clicking sound was caused by the backcheck wires hitting the edge of the buttons. I just loosened the 3 screws that hold the rail in place and slid the rail further back in the fork/mounts. Let-off will have to be re-regulated in that section. I had yet another click today. The piano is a Kawai K-30 upright. On hammer blow, there's a click, as well as some resistance late in the key stroke. This was happening on many notes in the middle section of the piano. I thought I'd cured the problem at my last visit when I regulated the backchecks to catch the hammers sooner. I found more clicking today, though. I was determined to find the cause rather than to try to treat the symptoms. What it isn't: jack hanging up or hitting anything it isn't supposed to loose hammer head or shank loose catcher or shank loose anything Some of you long-time techs should get this one in a hurry. It was a new one on me, though. Dave Stahl Dave Stahl Piano Service 650-224-3560 dstahlpiano at sbcglobal.net http://dstahlpiano.net/ Check out the new AOL.
