Greetings, 
     I have one of those. It is metal, has a small rectangular base, and a 
sliding metal rod inside another one, with a pin through it to measure the 
strings. I think these have been in use for a long time in the piano trade. 
I do use a pair of sticks, attached to one another so they can slide, for 
determining how long the lyre prop sticks need to be.  It is the only way I ever 
found to get it exactly right.
