It's obviously not the same for each of us. I tend to think that there is a natural selection process going on, and we and our customers are more or less equal participants in the process. If we believe that using the customer's bathroom is not only OK, but a normal and expected part of the visit, then we will, over time, end up with customers who agree (or at least don't mind), since the ones who object will not call us back. Or we will decide not to tune for the individuals who object. One of my mentors uses the first visit pitch raise to audition (her word) new clients. If they accept her advice to schedule a fine tuning a month after the pitch raise, or if they respond to the first post-card reminder, they stay on her list. If not, she wastes no energy mailing or phoning to schedule future tunings. Over time, tuners and compatible piano owners tend to find each other. The lesson for those who understand this process is, your attitude and behavior will determine what kind of clientele you end up with.
