Likely best to try and keep it in the same line to minimize damper problems. Also, I should think a nail of similar diameter cut to length would work fine also. You have a little latitude sideways or above or below, but try to keep the string in about the same place. Drill a hole, then use a drill bit the next size larger cut or ground to the proper length and drive it into the hole just drilled. A little gold paint and "voila." Good luck!
