Annie, without the BANG I would think it could be the pin in the frame. Don´t know the proper English term. I am talking about the pin which is on the downside of the piano, where the string is strung around. Perhaps that pin has a wrong angle, i.e. it shows too much upside. As a result, the string has no "grip" on that pin/frame. But you would see that immediateley if you have a look on that pin: the string would not rest on the frame. I tuned a piano with that damage and the effect was very close to that what you described: raising pitch is followed by strong pitch lowering. But as mentioned: without a strange BANG, just not holding the pitch.
