Hi Mathew, Cover the mess with a lovely piece of wool felt. This will be cosmetically pleasing and may even slow down the rust a bit. It's fast, doesn't damage the piano and is actualy a positive if it is a grand string cover. You can't get all the rust without replacing the strings and pins.
