Mowtown

Re: MowtownForty years married to your girlfriend? Congrats!

In the late-'60s, I was at a boarding school near Cincinnati, and one of the
girls had a transistor radio that she listened to late at night, very
softly, in our big open dormitory room. It was always playing Motown, and
the sound of that wonderful music, just barely audible and utterly
entrancing is still one of my favorite memories. Oh, man, that was great
stuff!

Check out "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", if you haven't seen it. Dear
darling daughter bought it for me for Christmas.

Mowtown is not nearly as much fun. <g> Yeah, been there done that, trying
to time the tuning to dis-coincide with the mower noise.

Yeah, yeah .... Ramsey Lewis! "Wade In The Water" ... fabulous stuff,
1965, I believe. I can remember sitting with my girlfriend (now married 40
years) at the Dog n' Suds restaurant in Urbana, Illinois (University of)
listening to that with root beer and chili dogs. Wow. Thanks for stirring a
great memory! And this is one crazy white guy who loved the Motown Sound
from Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, all of it.

How about. "The In Crowd" by Ramsey Lewis. Or any of the James Booker
stuff. Incredible cuts on night club pianos that you can literally hear
falling apart as they are being played. 'The In Crowd' was a best selling
instrumental and maybe Ramsey's biggest hit. If you could would you go back
and prep those pianos for the recording? Please don't, might ruin
everything.

    Julia,

Assuming you meant "Motown", I'd suggest you watch "Standing in the
Shadows of Motown", a documentary about the backup musicians who created
that wonderful sound. From their descriptions of the early days, I wonder
whether the pianos were even tuned for sessions.... It might also give you
some leads to who might have the answers to your questions.

And if you haven't seen it, check out "Buena Vista Social Club" for more
marvelous music on poorly maintained pianos, particularly the playing of
Rubén González.

      Greetrings,

Does anyone know of any tuners that tuned for
Mowtown? How can I find out what tuners were working on that area in that
time? I wanna know if they tuned in ET, because things sound as if its NOT
ET on ALOT of the recordings.
