I completely agree that T-nuts are the repair of choice. But, Barb, I install the screws from the top. I don't have to use the nuts. I drill from the top down, then press the T-nuts up from the bottom and just use the machine screws from the top. This way, you won't have to use the ratchet or wescott to remove the pedal while doing future service.

Hey Jack,
 
T-nuts!  I came upon this Kawai that another tech had used nuts and bolts---long bolts. (picture 14) Try dealing with those to fix other pedal problems!   I tilted the piano and installed the t-nuts and the right size screw-head bolt. Pictures 57 & 60.
