Was that your mute I found in a piano, Will? 

Fine idea. You can also use a bit of strip mute-like material without sacrificing mutes--unless you're cutting it off a strip mute you use frequently. :-)

I don't recall if I ever sent this or not, so here it is. 

I use a rubber donut grommet to mute plain wire strings until they settle. 
Works great. I use needle nose pliers to insert and remove.
