[pianotech] Rubber Grommets !!!!

Hello all,

Just finished the job in my shop. They are the square nuts. I used Liquid
Wrench and let it set for a while to help unfreeze them from their rusty
frozen places. As expected, all of the rubber crumbled even before taking
it out of the piano and the rest while removing them from the stickers. I
managed to get all of the nuts off OK using the regulating tool for these
things on a drill clamping the sticker wires with a vice grip to hold them
firmly in place. ZIIIIP off they came. Put the new ones one the same
way.

Fortunately, I had no problems with the new nuts fitting properly. I've
replaced a boat load of these over the years and so far, knock on wood, have
not encounted any screwy sizes as mentioned in another post. I also used
some Protek MLP on the threads to assist the new ones so they wouldn't bind
while being turned on.

The most difficult part of this whole job was removing all of the rust. I
wound up using my dremmel with a wire brush on the prongs in the keys.
Then, I put the round brass thing that we use to clean the barrel of a gun
in my drill and gently cleaned out the inside of the U in the prongs. Then,
I used 4-0 steel wool on the threads on the stickers going around them. The
fingers get sore after a while though!

Boy, everything is cheap today too. 5 out of the set of brand new grommets
had the nuts half way out or sideways in them. Luckily, they send extra's.

Thanks for the advice. You might say, this job is NUTS!

Jer

Subject: [pianotech] Rubber Grommets !!!!

Hello Gerald,

Kimball used two types of rubber grommets.

you did not say which.

One was by Pratt - Read with a square top

and the other was built by Wood-- Brooks with

the round or "dough-nut " grommets.

While It is necessary to remove the metal screws

on the P--- Read to replace the grommets it is not

necessary to remove the metal screws on the Wood

---Brooks.

Regards to All !!
