>From my experience, it is a Phillips head screw, but a very poorly made one. About half of the ones I've worked on were very hard to get out. It takes?a very good, heavy Phillips driver to turn them. I've even had to resort to using a needle nose vice grips to turn them out.

The other thing that makes them so hard to get out is the hole in the bracket is just barely big enough for the shank to go through. Which means that when the action bracket comes away from the plate, the screw will bind in the hole. So you need to keep the action bracket in contact with the plate while removing the screw. Therefore,?it is a good idea to enlarged the hole in the action bracket before putting the action back in the piano. It will also help to put some vj-lube, or some other greasing agent, on the screws before putting them back in.

Subject: [pianotech] Kimball action bracket screws

Hi list,?
While tuning a Kimball console with Schwander action the other day, I noticed the screws holding the action brackets to the piano were different than I, with my limited experience, have seen before. Thought I'd ask about them before I have to take them out someday! They seem to be a cross between a philips head and a square drive--that's the best I can do. They don't look like a philips screwdriver would be very effective. What's the tool of choice??
Thanks.?
