If you or someone else has damaged the heads of the screws, don't compound the problem, by using the same screws.
Install new ones, of a type and size, which will lessen the problem in the future.

Yes, by all means, anything to lubricate it, Vaseline, VJ Lube and of course, replace them. No need for those screws to be 12' long and so tight you can't get them out let alone back in again. I always dreaded working on those pianos for that very reason alone.

However, one other thing to try next time around is to use a strong cordless drill to remove them with a good solid screw head. I use one that is abou 6" long so I have a little room to play with if the case is in the way or something else. It sure beats the heck out of screwing them out by hand and is 5 times faster.

Thanks, all, for the responses and for confirming my suspicions that current state is overkill. I failed to mention that the screws came out just a bit out of true, which considering how TIGHT they were made it almost agony. I did have dreadful visions of needing to use Vise-Grips... sure glad the existing screw heads held up so that was unnecessary. (And I hope they hold up next time, too...)

Barbara, I have a small camera in my tuning case... I'd be glad to send you pix for TT&L!

One suggestion, I have been using a bit of beeswax on the threads when replacing the screws. It helps them go in easier and will make it more pleasant to remove them next time (for the new shorter screws).

I use what I carry, which is VJ Lube. That is, assuming I can get the stupid screws out.
