They improve the _listening_.

I've used hearing protection of all sorts since way before I even
tuned my first piano, let along became a CAT (computer assisted
tuner).

Hearing protection doesn't improve sound any more than dark glasses
improve light. They are both to protect from sensory overload and
subsequent damage.
