I've been using the fine resource of this list for the past year. The
amount of information out there is massive.

Today I was exploring ways to search the list information more effectively,
and I'm sure I learned some things that would be useful to the users of the
list.

List archives are publicly accessible at
http://ptg.org/pipermail/pianotech.php/. That page, however in itself is
not conducive to searching. But on the
other hand it does make all of the discussions on this list available to the
search engines including Google. That alone is not too helpful in finding
particular information discussed on this list, but using advanced syntax in
a google search will yield good results.

To specifically search this list, you need to prefix your Google search with
the following text:
site:ptg.org inurl:pipermail/pianotech

When using this code, be certain to leave no space after the colons.

Here are some examples of searches that you might try on Google:

site:ptg.org inurl:pipermail/pianotech tight pin
site:ptg.org inurl:pipermail/pianotech tuning pin torque

site:ptg.org inurl:pipermail/pianotech plate removal
site:ptg.org inurl:pipermail/pianotech "plate removal"
site:ptg.org inurl:pipermail/pianotech Steinway "plate removal"

The last three search examples are progressively more specific.
1) Plate Removal -- Without the quotes, Google looks for the words plate and
removal anyplace in the text.
2) "Plate Removal" -- With the quotes, Google looks for the words "plate
removal" where they are adjacent in that order.
3) Steinway "Plate Removal" --- This narrows example 2, so that "plate
removal" and Steinway are both found in the page.

Enjoy!

here's the Google playbook:
